Almost the same. My g grandmother married my grandmother's elder brother which made her grandmas sister-in-law. Then grandma married g gran's son (from an earlier relationship) which then made grandma daughter-in-law to her own brother. To make matters worse g gran brought her son up as her nephew, which made her my mothers g aunt and my g g aunt as well as my mum's grandmother and my g g gran. (having now explained all this I must now lie down!!) If only these folk would have had a little thought for future family historians. Pauline

Just the normal parent-child relationship. They came from opposite ends of the country.

My step uncle was formally adopted by his sister which means he is also my step cousin. That means my mother is my cousin too, I think.Thats just the easy bit, once I start explaining my grandmother was married three times but only had two husbands (1 & 3 were the same man. You'd have thought she'd have learnt better as both marriages ended in divorce) Most peoples eyes start glazing over at this point!

My grandparents were first cousins as well as husband and wife, so my great grandma is also my great aunt. So my grandad's sister in law was also his cousin, and my Mam was also her Dad's second cousin! Therefore, my Mam is also my fourth cousin. I think.... My head hurts now!

A couple of weeks ago, Bob added a brilliant poem on the general board entitled 'I am my own granpa' ... and my daft teenage son actually sat down and worked out that it was possible (well in a way!). Seriously though, this is really interesting, I haven't come across anything like this in my own tree but will keep a lookout! Mandy :)

Does that make you your own 6th cousin then? A

As my great-grandparents were related it also means that there are some collateral relationships between me and my mother. As well as being mother and son, we are also fifth cousins and 4th cousins-twice removed. I remember someone I was once in contact with saying that they were related to their mother about five different ways. I guess it depends on how many related married couples their are in your tree. What's the most number of ways of being related to your parent that anyone on this board has got ?? Simon
