It definately does happen I have a birth cert (Illegitimate) for Sarah McLure born May 1857. Not registered till July 1858!! Her mother Catherine had to get a special signature from the Sheriff-sub in Glasgow I still don't know if she's my Sarah....no father! :-(

Hi Carol, sounds as if it is your Grandma, Ive come across this kind of thing myself.People then didnt really go in for the birthday thing the way we do, and very often registered their babies late, forgot the day and date.I cant find my Grandmas birth, have her marrige and death cert the ages on them dont quite tally, but its definitley her.Have searched and searched 1837 for her birth, (Ive done three years either side of what we thought was her birthday) all to no avail. Another relative of mine was always told she was born in 1929,when she went to claim her pension in 1989 it came out she wasnt born till 1930. Good luck Kathleen

thanks, but that is where I got the certificate from..1937online. I guess i could understand if it was a couple of days different but 6 months seems strange. her age was given on her mariage certificate(maybe a bigamous marriage but thats another story)as 24 (in 1931) and 5th may was given as dob on her death certificate.but I guess her husband didnt have to produce a birth certificate to register the death (1980) Anywhere else to check apart from going to newcastle? The birth certificare says born 28november and registered 20december. How could she get 5may from 28 nov???? Im still not sure if this is the right person. How do you know if a birth was actually registered?

Have you searches 1837 online? Could it be possible that her birth was just registered late. I have an aunt who was born in February and not registered until December! lucky for me the surname I was looking for is extremley unusual. Pat

how do you know if you have the right birth certificate? we always thought my grandmother was born in may 1906 but can only find someone born in november 1906. Same name, same fathers name and same place. How do I know if its her? If it is her I can trace 3 more generations, if not, looks like end of the line for now thanx
