The other method is "halving". Go for the middle page, if it's way out then go halfway between there and the end which should contain the entry. Then halfway between that and either the middle or end. And so on. So with 40 pages you might go, 20; 10; 5; 3. Or 20; 30; 25; 27. You should be able to get the right page within 5 attempts. |

This might be a useful tip for someone, have just had to decide where in 41 pages I should look, so I got out my local phone directory and counted how many columns there were with the first 3 letters of that surname, and where the name I was interested in came in that list, then worked it out pro rata. Was correct to within 1 page, i was pleased to say. Val |
