This is probably something really stupid but I want to copy my GEDCOM file on to a CD. Is it possible? I tried to do this on my laptop, an Ibook but Quick Time did'nt recognise the format. I also have an old pc but don't think it will work there. I don't know much about the GEDCOM files so any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Cathy ~~

Cathy.....yes you can burn a .ged file to a CD. The obvious, you need to have a CD burner. You also need to have a CD burning program on your PC.....XP has a CD burning program. You can also use other programs...... I personally like NERO. Quicktime is for playing video, not burning CD's which is why it wouldn't recognize the .ged format. Judy

Judy, I had hoped it might be you that replied.! yes, my laptop I.Book is a Mac and has a cd burner but perhaps I did'nt go about it the right way. I am on 'Tribalpages' as well and after the daily backup allowed, I tried to copy it on to the CD and burn it but had a message about Quick Time - I don't know why. Am sure it's something simple..? I have no backup at present as everything is on Genes Reunited or Tribalpages so need to do this. Many thanks for any advice.! Cathy ~~

Cathy....unfortunately I'm not up on Macs! (Macs are a different animal!) I'm sure, though, you can find out what type of CD burning program you need if you computer isn't already set up for it. I would think that your Mac did come with the necessary software since the CD burner came with the Mac? If CD burner was bought seperately software should have come with it. You could try saving it to CD by opening the program you wish to copy, go to the top of your screen and choose SAVE AS and then choose the CD drive as the place to save it (make sure there is a disk in the CD tray.) If the computer has software burning program it should copy to the CD. If you end up needing a burning program you could do a GOOGLE search for it by entering a search for: CD burning program ____ (insert your computer model.) Any program that is needed can usually be found on shareware sites.....for free. Once you know the program you need, if you want, I can send you the site where you can obtain it for free (as most programs need to be bought.) Also, check the HELP on your computer which may have the answer you are looking for. J

Thanks for your reply, Judy.! I know Macs are different and will try again when I can. For sure I can't do this on the pc as it does'nt have a cd burner but I have been happily burning music and jpg files with the I.Book with no problem. Will persevere... Cathy ~~
