This may sound like a stupid question, but do Death records usually show the Maiden name or the Married name?

I have one from the 1870s that only shows the married name. Later on they included the maiden name in a separate box, but you will find the reference under the married name.

As they were unable to register their own deaths, they would be registered with the name that the informant thought they were known by.

Following on from what Geoff says, not all info on a death cert is accurate. If the informant gives incorrect details they aren't checked. I know my nana's middle name changed from her birth cert to her death cert 'cos the spelling was the way she wanted it to be spelled, not the way it was recorded at birth.
