Hi Ginny, I should have also said that you can make arrangements to search the Land Registry, ring your local Land Registry office and they will give you the details of the office where the property is registered, and arrangements will be made for you to view the register. Also, as said previously, you can also search the 1901 census to see who lived in the house then.

Hi Ginny, you can search yourself online for the owner of a property (even if it is tenanted). The cost is £2. You will see the current owner and who it was purchased from. You could write to the present owner and ask questions, even ask for the address of the person they purchased from so you can write to them. Failing which ring the Land Registry direct. There are websites to help research the History of a House. Good Luck, I have emailed you also.

Hi Ginny Try your local council.Ask them where you can access the archives. We are lucky in Hertfordshire as we have HALS,Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies centre.I'm sure there must be similar centres elsewhere. Good luck

If it is your house you are researching, then the deeds would have a list of previous owners, but would not be any good for tracing tenants.

Thankyou. I was wondering if somewhere like land registry could give all the owners of a specific property

Kelly's directories are useful as they list the main householder yearly i think except for the war years. They are usually in the reference section ofthe local library. Kim

You can now search by address on the 1901 census and anyone with the CD's can also do this for the 1881. But it gets harder in the 20th century.
