This is the content of my letter, as per the above request from Dave- hope it helps!! Dear Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and let me assure you straight away that I am not selling anything. I am writing because I am trying to trace xxxxx , who I believe is my father’s cousin. The xxxxx , I am looking for was born in xxxx , and had a mother called xxxx , maiden name xxxx ,. My father is xxx x , son of her brother Frank. Frank's family moved to Somerset in 1925 and lost touch with the family in Wales. I have been researching the family tree for a while now, and am keen to try and make contact with any living descendants. If any of these details sound familiar please could you find the time to contact me- I have enclosed a stamped envelope for your convenience. If this letter has not reached the right person then I apologise for the intrusion. Yours Sincerely

Hi Ann. Glad to hear your good news. I've written to a few people over the past few years and only 2 have ever replied (even though i know the other people are related to me!). Best wishes Jackie

Ann, Well done I'm really pleased for you. I have noticed that many people including myself have asked about spec letters on these boards. Would it be possible for you to cut and paste your successful letter without names and addresses of course to help people wanting to do this xx Dave

Just to let you all know that thanks to some wonderful people on this site who provided help withaddresses from the electoral roll, I have traced 5 of my Dad's cousins that he did not even know he had. I sent a spec letter last week and received a reply this morning from one of them- with a photo in it that looked so much like my dad they could have almost be brothers!! He has invited me to write again to ask any questions I have about his side of the family. I feel so pleased with myself- and wanted to share it with you all ,and to also say- if you are in a similar situation- write that letter!!! You have nothing to lose, and hopefully more family to gain if you are lucky!!!!
