My illegitimate Gt Gt Grandfather born 1828 John Parrott Taylor, mother Margaret Taylor, his middle name was the surname of his father? On Mobberley Parish christening record it states parents - mother Margaret Taylor servant, abode, Mobberley, and on his marriage certificate the father column was left blank. Although I have been tracing my family tree for about 2 years now, everyone on GC seems to be a lot more knowledgable than me! Cheers Sally

Sally I believe that sometimes middle names are an indication of father's name in the case of illegitimate children, but it doesn't necessarily mean this is so in your case. I suppose you could look in the parish registers for a Mr Parrott who might be the right age. Alternatively, the local record office may have "bastardy bonds" or other info, often in the parish chest, which may help you discover the father. Helen

I have a case of a Lewis who was named after his grandmother's surname , not his mother's. he was illegitimate though, and not brought up by his mother. Kim

Hi Helen, Thank you for your information, I had not heard of bastardy bonds before, and thats something else to look for, it really is addictive isn't it, I had a quick look at Google late last night. Kim, Thank you for your reply, JPT seemed to be quite pround of the "Parrott" name as on all official forms e.g. parish registers, b.certs and m.certs he has used it. Sally
