Sue 1837 online can be expensive. Larger libraries have the GRO on microfiche I believe, and there's always the Family Record Centre in London whre you can consult the book indexes. Both these options are free for searches. Helen |

Thank you, ladies, for your replies and suggestions. I don't think his death certificate would give me his D.O.B. or birthplace, unfortunately. As I don't know the exact date of the marriage between Thomas Henry EVANS and Ellen WILLIAMS, or even the correct year, does that mean I have to trawl through 1837 online, or is there anywhere else I could look? Thanks Sue |

If he was in hospital prior to his death the informant may not be a relation.I have a nurse on one from the 1890's.Also if the death resulted in an inquest the informant is given as the coroner.I do hope that neither of these applies. Good luck Janet |

Usually the informant at the death would be a close family member, either spouse or children. If spouse you would have a maiden name to search for the wedding. Happy hunting Helen |

My 87 year old mother-in-law has seen my success in tracing my father-in-law's family history. I have managed, with help from distant rellies, to get back to 1600s. She wonders if I could 'do' her family too. The trouble is, F-i-Ls name is SELDON (not that common) and M-i-Ls parents were WILLIAMS and EVANS! She does not know her Dad's date or place of birth, or the names of his parents, only that he talked about growing up in the Malvern Hills. I have had some success with her mother's family (WILLIAMS) with help from some very kind people on this site and have found them on 1841 census. Mum doesn't know when her parents married, but her elder brother was born in 1914, so we are presuming around 1911-1912. She thinks they married in Culworth, Northants which is where Mum's Grandparents lived. Mum's father was called Thomas Henry EVANS, known as Harry (or Pop in later years). I have the date of his death in 1960s. Would his death certificate show his date and place of birth? Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks Sue |
