My maternal grandmother's birth certificate gives her place of birth (& her parents address) as 2 & 1/2 (half) Nicholson Street. How common was it do that to street addresses? I thought it only happened in this day & age with new houses getting a/b/c etc.. when there's already 1 house on the land. Would value any opinions people may have. Thanks....Zoe, in a very windy Wellington, NZ

Hi Jackie, It was actually Nicholson St. in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham. Perhaps it was a Northern thing? My rellies were certainly from the lower class so all their houses wouldn't have been fancy. Perhaps they divided old houses in half & got 2 familes in, just to call them separate houses. Very peculiar! Thanks....Zoe

Hi Christina, Pontefract is in the North as well isn't it? I wonder if anyone from further South has come across the same thing? Best wishes.....Zoe

Hi Zoe I have found 1/2 Streets in the London area as well, so in fact 1/2 Streets were all over the place, how odd eh! Lynda

In Sunderland there are still some streets of flats that used to be large houses have the number & 1/2. Most of them have changed to a & b but some still use the half sign on their front doors. (My nana was born in 13 1/2 old colliery cottages with 2 families living in them) Kay

There are also instances of 12 1/2 being given to avoid using the "unlucky" 13. The road I live in now has no 13, just 12 and 14 next to eachother. My house number is higher than that, but originally the numbering was to go the reverse of what it does now, and our plot no. was 13. I'm not superstitious.

Crikey, how bizarre it is. I haven't come across it with any of my other family members so am amazed that so many of you have. Thanks for sharing your stories! Best wishes...Zoe, Wellington, NZ
