The BmD records for catholics would be registered at local registry office just like anyone else-do you mean baptisms? They would have been recorded at the church- if it still exists then they may have the records there- you could try writing to the church. |

Hi Ann This months edition of the Family Tree Magazine - available from WH Smith - has a pull out section on Catholic Family History Online and provides a good list of sources. You can also obtain a booklet Tracing your Catholic Ancestry in England from the magazine or your local record office. Regards Eileen |

I tried for about 15 years to look at certain Catholic records. They were still in posession of the priest,he refused to let me look at them , wouldn't look at them himself if I gave him approximate dates and names.I also offered him money for the church funds,he refused.A couple of years ago I found them in the local record office,it was so wonderful to get all this information I had waited years for, even though it was all in Latin! On a more positive note another Catholic priest let me look at his records for the best part of a day and helped me out with the Latin.A distant cousin was coming over from America and wanted to look at Catholic records, the church secretary charged her £3 per name for look-ups. So I think it all depends on the individual priest. Good luck! |

I have also had problems in the early 1800's finding Catholics, because it was still illegal up until 1832 in the UK and they were somewhat reticent even after that. I can highly recommend the librarian in the Catholic Library near Euston Station, London. She told me this and also has the inside line on which priests are co-operative in London etc. I have written to several and sadly the helpful response rate is low but when you do get a nice one it's brilliant. |
