I know a variant spelling of Malyon, pronounced Mallion. Didn't know it was another version of Maling - I have Mealings from Gloucestershire in my tree, sometimes spelt Maling or Meling!

Both Dowsett and Mallion seem to be most common in Suffolk, Herts and Essex if tbe VRI is to be believed. Where are your lot from?

Jim Mallion - possibly mother's maiden name, or maiden name of father's mother. Look for the name Mallion in previous family branches. Ian

I have a Daniel Dowsett in my tree. He and his wife Mary nee Barton had a daughter in 1766 and named her Elizabeth Mallion Dowsett. My Great great great great grandmother. The name rolls off the tongue so well that I have developed a special affinity for her and would love to find out more about her. Please does anyone have any ideas where this strange middle name could have originated? Jim
