Anyone know what Encephalocele (occipital lobes extruded) means? The baby only lived an hour. Also what is Catarrhal pneumonia - sanguineous apoplescy(or apoplexy) a few minutes - he died at 22 years? Or does anyone know a site for looking these medical terms up? Thankyou, Maggie

Maggie, I am going to put the definitions on here, even though they are not very nice, as there are probably others whose interest has aroused. Encephalocoele/Encephalocele - This means protrusion of brain tissue or the membranes around the brain through a defect or hole in the skull. It is usually a congenital condition, caused by the skull failing to form properly and is like spina bifida, but higher up. This is not compatible with life. (I think "occipital lobes" must be a part of the brain and "extruding" means "sticking out from") Cattarrhal pneumonia - acute pneumonia Sanguineouse - relating to blood Apoplexy - a sudden loss of sensation and movement due to a disturbance of blood supply to the brain. Any sudden rapidly fatal disease. All definitions taken from a pamphlet entitled "Causes of Death & Old Medical Terms" available at www(.)genealogyprinters(.)com I think! Maz. XX

Hello Maggie Occipital lobes are at the back of the head-hence protusion of brain tissue through defect in skull in this area. Apoplexy is another term for a "stroke" Hope this helps Rod
