Hi Ann, No one knows for sure IF he did in fact marry her. I have just ordered a copy of his death certificate to see if that gives any clues, but I think he died in an OAP home, alone. Sad eh? (incidentally he died 3 months before my dad). Julie

Just a thought- did he eventually marry the woman whose name he took? I remeber reading somewhere, and I am sure people will correct me if I am wrong, but I think a man can take the name of his wife on marriage just as a woman can take her husband's- very few do though. Have you tried searching for a 2nd marriage?

My grandfather and grandmother divorced before I was born (in 1961). My father (now deceased), rarely spoke in adulthood to or about his father. My grandfather changed his surname (apparently after his divorce) and moved to a completly different part of the UK to start a new life and we as children didn't even know of him until we were about 10/12 years of age. I don't know if the surname he was going under was changed by deed poll or was 'taken up' from the woman he eventually lived with (as it was the same as hers). How do I find out where/how this change was done. Many thanks, Julie.
