It's better to take pencils (and a sharpener, and a rubber) than pens. Some places won't let you use pens so it's safer just to leave them behind.

Penny You'd be better off at the county record office, although you may like a photo of the church. They will have facilities there for copying and be able to help you locate records and possibly give you some advice with entries you can't read. The record office will also have census returns on microfilm and other material of use. The Essex Record Office is in Chelmsford but has a Colchester and a Southend branch. Hi, Most parish records will be held at the county record office not the church. Most vicars make a standard charge for you to view parish records at the church and an appointment is essential. Gwynne

i am planning a trip to boxted essex where my rellies are from, to double check info that i have from LDS, this is the first time i have done this and would welcome any advice that anyone might give me. 1) like do i need to ring the church to make an appointment? 2) what is the best way to record info i find but cannot read properly? 3) what do i need to take? eg.pencil, pad,etc i know this sounds silly but i want to be correctly prepeared for my trip. all advice welcomed!!! thanks in advance penny
