Births versus Christening?????

Don't know if it helps, Philip, but I've found that most of my rellies, infact all bar a few, were chrisitened within two or three months of birth. Apparantly, it was because If the child died, (and one of my rellies lost 5 of 8 children in first 5 years), they did like to know they had been christened before they were buried!!!

Thank you Anne, We are making our yearly visit back home this September and we are planning to make trips to Suffolk where most of my ancesters came from,Maybe we can get to see actual Parish records to verify dates etc, Take care Philip.

I think it was up to the person compiling the parish register whether they put birth dates down. I have one of my family where they are the only ones with the birth dates recorded - their father was the curate!!! Also I think the "extracted" records on the IGI (which are the much more reliable ones) only recorded the christening date. Anne

I use the igi site a lot and have found that most of my records have the Christening dates and not the birth dates? I have some ancesters in Ireland and whilst its difficult to get data from Ireland I have found the they give a lot of birth dates from Ireland versus the christening dates, in England did they put more signficance on the christening dates or did they just not register the birth dates? sometimes i have numerous family members christened on the same date, This is not a gripe just an observation, Good luck in your searches, Philip Palmer.
