Stan Thanks for helping to clear up the confusion. I must say this will also come in handy with my Bristol ancestors

The confusion probably arises because, although Gisburn was in Yorkshire administratively until 1974, and has always been in the historic county of Yorkshire, it was part of the Clitheroe Registration District, which mostly comprises places in Lancashire, between 1837 and 1930. Registration Districts were the basis of Census taking, and the populations of areas like this had to be split between their constituent areas after the Census was completed. Consequently the original census returns where scanned or indexed, may come in the Lancashire records. The same thing applies close to the boundaries of most counties. Stan

According to Genuki it's Yorks (or was or still is depending on your view) It has a very good looking website (parish buriel records online) http://www.gisburn.org.uk/ Bob

The plot thickens - I think he got born there on purpose! He always refused to speak about his family origins and now this! LOL Thanks Carole

It's possible that the parish has/had parts in both counties

Thanks Geoff I was getting confused as on 1881 census for g granddad it comes up as Gisburn, Lancashire, on 1891 as Gisburn Yorkshire.

Gisburn is a village in Lancashire situated on the A59 not far from Clitheroe. It used to be in Yorkshire until the boundary changes of 1974.

I think I've seen a web-site somewhere which would probably answer my question but can't find it on Yahoo. Please could someone direct me to it or tell me when Gisburn was in Yorks and when it was in Lancs - g granddad is driving me barmy. Thanks Carole
