Hi, not too sure about this but I think Maister and Master were interchangeable and came to refer to school teachers - school masters - head masters and hence master of science, master of arts etc. just a possibility good luck Dave |

Thanks Claire - I couldn't think of anything at all! I'm fairly sure there aren't enough letters for Maltster but of course the registrar might not have been able to spell even though his writing was neat! Many thanks for your help, Mandy :) |

I've just received a marriage cert from 1851 and the writing on it is very neat and clear; however, the groom's father's occupation looks like Matster which seems odd. The first four letters are definitely 'Mats' .. the next letter looks like a 't' but isn't quite so clear and I can't think what else it might be .. the last two letters are definitely 'er'. Very grateful to anyone who can shed light on this for me. Thanks, Mandy :) |
