This might not be odd but its new to me. I have been looking for my fathers birth records. I have found them but the circumstances are a little odd. My father has always been known as a Turner. We have the condensed version at home which shows his father as Reginald Bull. His mum was a Turner hence where he got his surname from. I believe his mother possibly married later but have no details, other than he was around fom my dad being very small. My fathers past has always been shrouded in mystery perhaps this is why. Does anyone know why a parent would record the fathers details on the birth certificate but then go on to give her child her own surname? The birth was recorded in 1945 if this helps Any ideas would be appreciated Kelly x

Very often an illegitimate child would have the fathers name recorded on the certificate. My eldest sister (born 1949) had my mothers maiden name despite the fact that the father is mentioned on the certificate. Sheila

Obviously she was Miss Turner, not Mrs Bull. At least you have his father's name. A lot of illegitimate children just have blanks.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of that. Not sure how to enter it on here though. Childs parents not married but mother later married is this possible to enter? Kelly x
