I also have very few (relatively speaking) members of my tree on here. I add people, one by one, occasionally but mostly I rely on me checking the site myself.

You are so right Brian, have amended after your prompt, fortunately [or unfortunately...lol!] not got 1000's so no excuse and also thanks because it has put me in contact with Mum's cousin, family not heard from since WW2, what a result!! Helen

Hi Brian i have all my tree on here almost 8 hundred if i make a connection i put the names on my tree and in the source box i put my contacts name, its not a case of pinching someones tree and adding it to mine, it usually works both ways, as i have some names they don't. i also send certificates and photos that i have to my connections if they want them, and i have had some sent to me. it also means it cuts down some orf the research time as we can dedicate time to the elusive ones, i also contact my contacts when i find something new as i did today, i don't see the point of being on the site and picking each others brains if your not going to share any info you have or find. i do hope you make some good contacts as i have who are happy to share all info happy hunting don't get to disheartened sandra

I too only have my direct lines on here. The full info is on Family Tree Maker. I too have lots of peripherals and lots of living people. When I first joined it took ages to input the information - can't do Gedcoms I'm afraid - please don't try and convert me! I don't want to put everything on here I'm afraid - like Gwynne, I have worked hard for many years to get this info!! I have added to all the 'who and where' threads for each county and check new additions to the site regularly. Maz. XX

Hi, I have nearly 6,000 names on my tree but have only listed a few generations of direct ancestors on here. This is partly because I had a lot of my research "stolen" from another website and that person is now claiming it as his own research. Another reason is that trees on GR are appallingly laid out and difficult to follow. The larger they are the harder it is to navigate. I keep my tree on my computer where I can also store other notes - apprenticeships, wills census etc. I have made very few contacts via GR, despite doing weekly blanket surname searches. Most contacts have come from family history societies members' interest lists, county surname webpages or the Rootsweb mailing lists. If I make a positive contact on this site I can send the information in a much clearer and more detailed format than that on GR. Gwynne

I uploaded most of my tree this morning after this prompting. I think I may now remove it - looking at a dozen names on "Names summary" had been easy - ploughing through 172 surnames (most of which are VERY peripheral) every day is no joke.

I also do not have all my known ancestors on here. Part of the reason is lack of time (I don't want to upload Gedcom) but the other, more important reason is that part of my family research has been done over many years by my Auntie and she's not too keen on putting the whole lot on here. consequently I just have the main ones for those branches. I am guilty!! Have nearly 800 members on Paf tree but only 300 members on here, one reason is I have a lot of cousins marrying each other which would lead to A LOT of duplicate entries till gc sorts it out, another reason is pAF is much easier to use and print off , and I haven't got round to it . A lot of my tree is still Living and so unless I know they wouldn't mind I don't put on their details at all in case it upsets them .... Sorry!! KIM

Brian I have all my family members on my tree and only 2 people have contacted me with - distantly removed - connections. But if anyone did contact me with a relie they hadn't put on their tree I would ask them why and point out that they are potentially missing out on making contact which is the whole point! Some of my relies are v. obscure - Unknown b. 1820? kind of entries, but they are there so I can add their names and dates when I find them.

Why do so many members have only a small part of their tree on here? So many times I have posted a new name on my tree, only to have someone respond within days to say "Oh yes, that is my grandmother's sister" or whatever. But they have not got that person on their tree and the entry I have posted is the only one on the site, so neither I nor anyone else could have made a connection in the other direction.
