When and where was the marriage and what was his wife's name? Were any of the witnesses to the marriage Ethertons?Have you tried tracing them on any censuses eg 1851/61? This would give an age and place of birth. I can't trace a Samuel on the 1881 census of the right age - do you know if he had died by then? Marriage Date - 1865 Location - Not sure - but possibly Southwark,London..thats the residence location address on the certificate I requested a lookup last night on an 1861 census thread for their address..which was 2 Union St. Southwark. So far no reply. Wifes name - Ann (Nancy) Cox - age 29 - born Surrey, St.George Groom - Samuel James Etherton - age 28 - born St.Lukes - thats in Middlesex I believe. Occupation - shoemaker I was given the information of the marriage over the phone last night, I will have the certificate in my possesion later this week, so will know if there were any etherton witnesses on the certificate then. Regards Martin

Not so simple I'm afraid...I live in Holland....normally coming back to uk once per year to visit family in Sheffield.... Looks like I might have to find a good excuse for a holiday in London !

If you can get to the London Metropolitian Archives in London (near the FRC) they have some of the parish records on microfiche. Makes it easier if you know the church too. I logged onto the LMA site and found the references for the parish records of the church that I needed which made everything much quicker. Ther staff there are very helpful.

Hi, Pre 1837 you have to look at parish records. These are held in county record offices. Many have been put on the IGI by the LDS church and can be found on their website www(.)familysearch(.)org. - remove brackets. The IGI is not totally reliable so any you find should be checked against original records - this also applies to any other transcribed records such as the British Vital Records Index. The LDS have filmed many parish records and these can be "hired" and viewed at any LDS centre. Hope this helps, Gwynne

martin, you could try phoning or writing to the register office which covers the area he was born and ask them if they could look at the early records for you,if it was 1837,some do apparently.Or if it was 1836 try the churches in the area ,the local history society might be able to help.by letting you know which church covered what area. Before 1837 can be very time consuming. good luck

I just got my gggrandfathers marriage certificate through. I would like to trace his birth now but he was born in 1836 possibly beginning 1837. How can I get the information you normally get on the birth certificate, i.e an address, parents names, without the certificate. If anyone can help the detail I do have are.. Name - Samuel James Etherton Born - approx. 1836 - St. Lukes Fathers name - Samuel James Etherton (v.original) Fathers occupation - Shoemaker.. Hope someone can help. Regards Martin
