How long before registering a birth

FYI - I just discovered that until 1874 there were no penalties for not registering, so before then sometimes people didn't bother or they didn't abide by the 6 week rule. Hope you find him anyway!

Good....then based on that....and assuming he specified place of birth correct...I have him... Have a good weekend

6 weeks was official limit - if you were late you would probably "adjust" the birth date to be within 6 weeks!

I am trying to validate a person...my gggrandfather...I have given up trying to find his marriage...I can't find him on any census before 1881....but I do have his age on 1881 census, 1901 census and on his sons birth certificate... That leaves me with no other option than to check through 1837 online to see if there are any others born in same area around this period. However, I guess not everyone registered these births as soon as they occured...so I am trying to determine a "safe" period whereby I can pretty guarantee I have got my man... Anyone any idea how long that "safe" period might be.. My ancestors name is not uncommon.. Charles Wilkinson and he was born in Sheffield.. Any educated guesses welcome
