Bit strange but all I can think of is perhaps a heavy accent (they were from rural Sussex/Surrey or a tipsy vicar/groom!!! Penny

I would think just because it is a very strange way of spelling James and he was pointing out that it said Geames on the original that he copied, and he didn't make it up! Especially as it says James in one place and Geames in another. Can't think WHY your relly would have written Geames in the first place though!!! Maz. XX

The marriage certificate has been transcribed/copied at some stage in its existence and the transcriber has written "sic" to mean "that what it says, it's not me who's made the mistake".

I have just received a marriage cert for James Rogers and Margaret Barnard in 1877. In the left hand bottom corner where it states This marriage was solemized between us it states his nam as Geames (sic) Rogers I know sic means as told to but can anyone throw any light on why this should be recorded as such. His name on all other documents is James. Also she is clearly stated as Barnard but the family know her as Barnett and in fact on various census she and her parents have used both names. Any ideas on either?Thanks Penny
