Can anyone help me with an illegible occupation on a marriage certificate. It's the bride's father. I thought at first he was farmer, but the groom's father is a farmer and on closer inspection it is obviously something else. I can't make out the capital, (possibly a 'G') but the rest of the word seems to be '_amen'. I've worked this out from the script on the rest of the certificate. This would make the word 'gamen'. On his daughter's birth certificate of 20yrs earlier he was a Waterman. Thanks Helen |

Thanks everybody. I'll have a look on that website. One thing I know is this occupation doesn't start with 'C'. The marriage was in Crowle and the groom's a carter. Helen |

Going back to your first idea of farmer, we have found several who look as if they were farmers when in fact it should be read as farrier. |
