Genuki states that the Gateshead Parish Registers go back to 1559. As well as the Durham Record Office, there is a copy in the Tyne and Wear Records Office in Newcastle. Stan

The first thing you ned to do for records going back in the 1600's is to ascertain when the records started for the area you are interested in. If it is Gateshead then this is Durham Co and you will need to contact the record office in Durham. If you can't get to Durham easily then try the Phillimores Atlas found in any big reference library and look up when the parish registers started from there. Many parish records started in the late 1500's and are in better condition than some of the newer ones. I have just seen a 1654 marriage record which was far clearer than one in the 1800's so it just depends on how they have been stored. Failing to find records for the time of interest then try the Manorial Records. If you do a google search on Manorial Records this will give you some idea as to how to go about finding them. Some usage of Latin is almost essential for these Manorial Records. You can just use the IGI but this is unwise to just rely on the IGI as it is not always accurate. Janet

Although people would have been recorded in parish registers I think in reality many of these would be either destroyed/damaged/impossible to read. I would check with the local records office and see what they say. Lucky you to have got so far back. I'm still struggling in the 19th century! Helen
