Sue, Welcome to genealogy!!!! Discrepancies are common, not just by your family, trying to hide their skeletons, but by census ennumerators, tired after a long day just writing anything, and any officialdom really. In polite society these are known as 'brick walls'. In the real worls a lot of expletives are exploded!!! :0) Maggie

I am very new to this, and almost immediately hit a problem when looking for my Grandfather's birth certificate!! His death certificate, and his marriage certificate (have the originals of both) show his date of birth as Feb 1908, but he was nowhere to be seen on the records when I looked him up. His christian names are Bert Owen on the 2 documents I have. Today I decided to try again, and looked more generally. Guess what?! I have found in the right sort of area a Bertie Owen born in Dec 1908. Is it usual to have such discrepancies in such a recent event? Is this likely to be the right man? I wasnt too surprised at it as my father was under the impression he was born at Chobham and declared that all his life. At the age of 50 when he applied for a duplicate birth certificate he found he was born at Dockenfield! Any advice appreciated! Many thanks Sue
