I have a gt granduncle who spent a lot of time in Broadmoor. On the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census he is listed William Mealing. On the 1901 census he is just "WM" but I know its him because of his age and the fact that he was born in a small village in Gloucestershire.

That's a brilliant tip. If you search the 1881 on family search, it gives the initials, marital status, birthplace, age and occupation of the patients. It might help anyone who can't find someone. You can get a whole list of patients if you search for the household. Lynne

Quite amazing what's lurking just waiting to be found isn't it - found some prisoners too!! Nearest I've found to my Edwin Henry is an "A.B." in the Leicester Asylum - born right time and place - is it too much to hope that it could be my Edwin going under the name of 'arry?? I know that he later had TB, so it may be worth seeing if I can check asylum records to see if he was there because of his TB - or maybe I'm just clutching at straws!!

Now here's a little gem - which some of you may already know about - but I didn't!! Searching the 1881 for my elusive Edwin Henry Butler born Leicester 1868 (still haven't found him, but that's another story....!!) - I discovered that the Leicester Borough Lunatic Asylum seems to have been concerned with patient confidentiality, and "thoughtfully" listed all it's inmates by their initials only!! A search of sample initials H.A. (don't forget the full stops) reveals that asylums all over the country did this - so if you have lost a relative in 1881, try searching by just their initials!!
