Thanks to everyone for their help. I spent the weekend going through all my Grandads old papers and he managed to destroy nearly everything he had from the war with the exception of a few photos. I did find out that he was a Desert Rat (fought at El Alamein), saw action at Monte Casino and that he served time in Italy where he was the chaffeur for a Padre. He also seems to have lived away from the Regiment with a Count and Countess and the Padre in Gallipoli. All help is much appreciated. Thankyou. Clare.xxx

Clare if you can't find his number look on Google for Staffordshire regiment's museum and try to trace him through them. Also there is a forces reunited site costs about £7 to join. good luck Dave

Hi Clare The address you want is: Army Personnel Centre Historical Disclosures Mail Point 400 Kentigern House 65 Brown Street Glasgow G2 8EX It costs £25 to get a copy of a persons army record and it would have to be your mother who applied as it has to be either the person who was in the army themselves or their next of kin. If you write to them or phone them they will send an application form out. At the moment it is taking anything up to about 9 months for records to be sent out after they receive the application. One thing though, you DO have to have full name, regiment and number of the person. They will not check without this. We happened to find my father-in-law's old paybook amongst his belongings which gave us this. Perhaps your grandfather kept something similar which would help you. Hope this helps Kath

My Grandad was in the TA (he loved horses) at the outbreak of WW2 and was called up right at the beginning of the war 8 days after he married my Grandma. He was sent to Africa and didn't return home until late 1946. He never received home leave and only saw his wife for 2 weeks in the first 6 years of their marriage. My Grandad was sadly very affected by the war and never spoke about his time away, he hated it so much that he refused to accept his medals. Grandad unfortunately passed away recently and now my mum would like to know more about where her Dad was for the first 6 years of her life. She would also love to receive his medals. Does anyone know where I can find out more about where he was and whether it would be possible to receive his medals now that he has died? Unfortunately I have no Army number or anything for him (except that I think he was with a Staffordshire regiment) but he does have an unusual name ALFRED NIBLETT. Any help would be much appreciated. Best Wishes Clare
