GeneaNet gave one hit which stated Forbach, Moselle and indicated a book or something that gave the history of the Surname in Forbach. Don't know if its any good to you. Have a look on the German site there's some names there.

Hmm ... it did the same thing to me - ah well, it seemed like a good idea. The two Strouvelles found are the LDS ones - the font used is exactly the same.

http://rat(.)de/kuijsten/navigator/france/index(.)html Have just run "Strouvelle" surname through this surname search for french sites and got 2 hits. One is the french lds site for a Nicolas and Jean Pierre and the other gives the area you mention but I couldn't get to grips with the info. Have a look see yourself.

After clicking "Alsatian Genealogy" click "Mailing list". I have (vague!) memories of a late-night drinking session in Forbach about 12 years ago.

Well the site you mention Geoff to click on union jack looks good , but it says must be a member to use it but doesn't tell you how to be one or what membership requires?/Unless I'm missing something........ Kim

Thankyou Geoff and Bob will look into those, thing is the plce is now definitely France on the Lorraine border "Forbach" bit, so will need to start there! The mistranscribed Strouvelles were one's I found , thanks. Although am still missing 2 others on the 1901 census Wilfred Alexander ( my grt grandfather)b1880/1 and Andrew Percy b1875 his brother. Thanks again for your assistance... KIM

Hi Kim, can't help on the french side, I'm afraid, but if you want to continue tracing your prussian lines, search for "german" on General Topics: There is a thread: searching german ancestors" (or similar) with at least one if not more "Prussian" web-sites listed. Good Hunting !

This could be a place to start http://www.alsace-genealogy.fr.st/ (click on the Union Jack) There are a couple of Strouvelles who were mis-transcribed on the 1901 cencus http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/help/cda020404q.html

I have traced my Strouvelle family back to Prussia. I know now frommy grandmother That John Strouvelle was escaping some kind of "conscription" in his homeland and was smuggled out by his father a merchant at the age of 21 to Britain. How do I trace further back, I have his marriage cert and death/cert but would love to be able to find out about his parents. He was born about 1833ish worked in Cumbria 1855ish and married in 1874after running away with his bride in Cambridge, there is also a family rumour that he may have left another wife in Prussia....He died in 1889 ina London hospital and his full Name was John Peter Alexander Strouvelle. I have traced what I can in this country but to get any info from France seems confusing and no hope of getting there, any suggestions? KIM
