Hi All, I've been searching for a James Penfold. He was married in Brighton in 1840 to Mary Baker and died in Paddington, Middlesex age 45 in 1866. This put's his birth around 1820. From his marriage cert I know his father's name is also James. However after a search on the LDS site and "assuming" he was born in Sussex, there are two James' both christened in 1820 with fathers also James. If one of these were to be mine, how would I know without the mothers name? Cheers, Naomi.

Naomi Short answer - you wouldn't! How can you find out his mother's name - well you could look on the census and/or find his dad's marriage. Did he have any sisters whose names might be helpful in confirming mother's name?

I would try to find him in 1851 and 1861 to find out birthplace. From that LDS might help to guide you to the correct James. It is only a guide though. Parish records often reveal gems of information not shown on the IGI.

Thanks guys, I'll start with the 1861 census and see where I can get with that. Naomi :0)
