Adoptions early 20th century

I don't think there were any offical adoptions until the 1920s, usually people were taken in by nearest rels, grandparents or Aunties etc or they were taken in by neighbours. If they were an orphan though they may have spent some time in the Workhouse. there were several Orphan schools I think too, some for fatherless children, I think they were pretty austere places. Some record offices have workhouse records. Sometimes they have more details than other places it varies/depends round the country. KIM

If someone had an adopted son in the 1901 census is there any where I can research this adoption? Thanks
