Hi William Welcome to GC & good luck in your research, there are a lot of people here who are extremely helpful, ask away if you need any. I see you have a lot to be getting on with..... Just thought I would mention to you & everyone (who doesn't realise) NO NEED TO ADD BRACKET TO A WEBSITE THAT CONTAINS "ORG" i.e. www.familysearch.org Hope this helps Sam

Hi William Welcome to the addictive hobby of genealogy. You can see already how willing and friendly people are here to help you , you only need to ask and those who have the time and resources will do their upmost to help, advice or support you. I too would say look for your grt grandparents marriage on the free bmd site first and if not found there to search the 1837 site. Once you have this information you can look them up on the 1901 census forms and find out their address occupations and their brothers and sisters etc etc. As your search progresses you'll find other people searching the same or similar lines of the family and this will enrich your tree further. This is how I started out with just my Nan - I now have on file over 6000 family members - it's just so addictive lol Welcome and remember we're happy to help when and if we can : ) Much happiness Debi

Bill, You should be able to go back further using 1837online but it can work out to be expensive if you don't have specific dates (I made several trips to the Family Records Centre in London at the start of my research, it's worth the trip if you want a number of 'hits'!). The 1901 census is also useful, again it is pay-per-view. The 1881 census can be viewed on familysearch(.)org (free!) Good Luck!

You could always try their names in the search box on this site and then email the people if it comes up with any likely matches, worth a try. KIM

Bill, I would look for the parents' marriage first, on FreeBMD. Search for one of them (the least common name) within a reasonable timescale, then check any that come up. If you click on the index page number, it will bring up the names of everyone on that page, so you can see if the other partner is there. You can then use the GRO Index to order the certificate online. This in turn gives you their fathers' names, so you can continue back. When you know which side of 1901 they got married, you will know which names to search for on the Census. Good luck! Carole.

Hello William Well firstly when requesting help always put in the dates as near as possible, names and town this helps anyone on this site to point you in the right direction. I would suggest at this stage (depending on you nans DOB) that you try Free BMD if it's 1837 onwards or/and Family search which is the free LDS site. Look for the marriage of you GR grandparents. The place that your nan was born can be a starting point for where they got married. A word of caution always check the facts you find as transcribers often made mistakes. Sorry without any further info I cannot offer more help Good hunting Pat

Bill, I'm fairly new as well but will try to help a bit. I went to 1837 all the time, but there is a free site called www(.)freebmd(.)org(.)uk - you have to remove the brackets because this site won't let you post web addresses so this is the code we all use! You could do a search on there with the names you have and a rough period for their marriage and their births, have a guess at how old they might have been when their child was born. I expect there will be loads of replies who will know more than me, but this might give you a start. Good luck, Mandy :)

You can try www.familysearch.org which is free or you can try the 1901 census. Searches are free but if you want to view information you have to pay. Try the resource centre link
