There is a memorial to killed police officers due to be built, and I have seen a full list of officers who died on duty either by murder or accident. It starts from when the police were formed to date.. Its on the national police memorial site. If you cannot find that on the net, try talking to www.polfed. or the magazine Police review.

The Black Sheep Index is very good, and should prove helpful. If not try contacting the force involved, they should have someone responsible for the archives who might be able to help you. I have had a lot of help from the Norfolk Police Historian. Good luck, Frances

I've recently been researching a murder of a military man who was a member of my family (though distant). A really good source was the Times Archive. The murder case I researched was quite a cause celebre at the time so did get quite a few column inches although probably no one would be remotely interested in it now - except me of course. My local libary service gives you access to it online if you join as an online member. You can join online even if you don't live in Bedfordshire at www.bedfordshire.gov.uk the pick libraries. The only downside is once you are in the website you can get really distracted by all the other stuff. You have been warned. Good luck. Jenny

Hello Paul, I have spent endless hours searching for info on the murder of my grandmother's brother who was a policeman in the 1930's-early 40's. What other info do you have?, names, town etc, and I'll have a look, might just need a different search tactic. I remember coming across a site with a list of fallen police officers and their photo, and a story about what happened to them. Diane NSW Australia

Black sheep index may help. There is also a CD Rom of British police officers killed from 1700-2000. Part 1 1700-1899, Part II 1900-2000. I think its £10 each or £18 for both. The CD is compled by Paul Williams of Murder Files. Email: [email protected]
