Tell me about it Helen - by 1881 Peter decided to change his name to Chantler but on his marriage cert it states his father as Peter McGregor Chantler - this is where the head banging came in. Linda

Lin While your relatives were having a good time, they didn't think about how difficult it would be for you to unravel the tangle they created, did they!

I have a similar one in my tree. Childs name was Mary Doutch Evans. Mother: Harriett Evans nee Elborough (widow). Father: Samuel Doutch was the lodger. They moved from Gloucester to Hampshire, never married, and I suppose it was easier if the child had the mother's surname. as they had moved, no-one knew when she was widowed so the child appeared legitimate

I have hunted high and low on John Chantler - nothing in the 1851/1861 census - although - wait for it - Georgiana's mother Maria had Georgiana out of wedlock but later married in 1868 a George Chantler b 1818 d 1873. So I'm thinking did Georgiana take the surname Chantler when her mother married and have a son by George's son John. Yes I agree - it seems like they were a bunch of hussies. Linda

Your Georgie sounds a bit of a raver! I thought nee meant "born" ie her maiden name as opposed to a previous marriage. What happened to Mr Chantler?

Hello Helen Georgiana first married a John Chantler - she had a son of the same name hence Georgiana being Campbell nee Chantler on Peter McGregor Campbell's birth cert. I have a feeling Peter and Georgiana were never married. I have tried the 1861 census no success. The 1871 census Georgiana went on to marry a John Hill. Linda

Check to see if Georgina and Mr Campbell got a divorce? I think during Victorian times a married man was assumed to be the father of his wife's children unless contradicted - it looks as though both Georgina and Peter wanted his name on the certificate. Ask someone to find Mr McGregor on the 1861 census? Check to see who is living with whom on the 1871 census?

I found my GG Grandfathers birth cert b 1861 St Pancras Peter McGregor Campbell. It states his father was Peter McGregor and mother Georgiana Campbell nee Chantler. Now I am confused - what do I do next? Lin
