one of my main surname interests has only 214 entries on the entire site and 30 are mine.... each day I look at Name Summary to see if any have been added. Today I look and see 32 new names added...wow!...but when I look at the 32 new names, they are all familiar and not new at all and the site total has gone up from 214 to 215. This happened a couple of months ago and I contacted GC then but their reply was unsatisfactory. The new names appear to be from the one source....should I contact this person myself and ask him what he is doing to cause this?

Hi Sue I've had this with one of my names. What I think is happening is someone deletes their tree, then re-loads it with one person added.

Could it be that he is deleting his tree, then uploading gedcom?

Sue This happens when someone updates their tree by loading a new gedcom file. On some sites you can simply update your existing tree but on this site you have to delete your entire tree and load the whole file again. This means that the site thinks this is a completely new tree every time it is updated. I agree it is frustrating and wish this site was easier to upload Gedcom files to. The new names are very misleading. I have 1053 names in my tree and every time I update my tree they appear as new names which I appreciate is very frustrating. I have my tree on several other sites so it is easier and less time consuming to keep my tree on Family Historian and upload it monthly to each site rather than update each site individually. There are many people on this site who also do this. It does cause a number of problems such as missed dates and places of birth and as you say appearing as new names. Hopefully GC will improve the Gedcom uploading system. Despite these little niggles, there are many lovely helpful people on this site. Hope you find this informative. Sorry I can't offer a solution. You might find the Gencircles site (which is free) with its smartmatching system more helpful. Happy hunting. Debs

Maybe members should be allowed just one initial gedcom upload . (Ducks under desk). Seriously though, uploaded gedcoms with dates and places of birth missing are worse than useless. If you have one or two people to add to a tree why not do it manually rather than deleting the tree and uploading a couple of hundred or thousand names again?
