I got 2 extracts recently which turned out to be the banns and didn't feel it got me any further. It said the father was Mr ............. (no christian name) I got more from the LDS site. I'm waiting for "Summer 2004" whenever that is when a lot more info will be on scotlandspeople.

Hi again, Jillian Price is running a thread called "SCOTTISH LOOKUPS" on the Records Office Board. She is going up to Edinburgh very soon and is offering to do looks ups whilst there. Think its on page 1 or 2

I bought a £10 certicate recently -a 1847 marriage in Kinnell, Forfar and it has several others on the page -only names though no parents. I did put it on a previous thread but no answers. The names are: MINTER AND FARQUHAR WILLIAMSON AND MCLACHLAN MORRISON AND GRAY RODGER AND TRAIL -all between 20th May and 14th Aug If anyone wants the details let me know. Rosalyn

Thankyou all for the time and effort. Although a day visit to Scotland is not too easy from East Sussex it would make a good excuse........ nah she won't wear it! My best bet may be to buy a copy of the entry and when I do I'll offer to do some look ups to justify my "sick squid" costs. Roger GC

From ScotlandsPeople: No. Date Surname Forename Spouse Name/Frame No Sex Parish GROS Data Image Extract 1 26 Sep 1847 FAIRBAIRN ROBERT ELIZABETH YOUNG/FR907 M BLANTYRE 624/00 0004 No Image You could go onto the site and order a copy for 10 pounds , ( on top of the 6 pounds you need to activate a session ) , but it is unlikely to tell you much. so if you want to save your pennies - You could ask someone who is visiting New register House to look it up on microfilm - the above gives a reference to the film and the frame number - Or you could hang on a month or two - because the OPR ( pre 1855 ) images are supposed to be coming on line this summer. If you are trying to identify the parents of this couple, it might be worthwhile trying to locate their death certificates ( if they died in Scotland after 1855 ) good luck with it

Oh yes I know - scotlandspeople is so addictive but so much easier and cheaper than english or irish researching. I only wish my family were scottish as I am only being successful researching hubby's scottish ancestors and not my own!!! I can't go on again until I've had a good look through which strands need confirmation. (have never lasted the 48 hours window allowed yet) Why not try scotsorigins(.)com - its the LDS/IGI OPR site for births and marriages in Scotland pre 1854 and you can clarify which county and/or district to look in - and its free!!!!

Roger, ask on the Records Office Board is some kind soul has a spare credit for Scotlands People (This is a dot gov dot uk site by the way). You will only really need one credit as it's unlikely you will get the parents names anyway from the OPR. give it a try first as people are usualy very helpful on here. I am always on Scots Peop myself but unfortunately have been banned from spending any more money on it for a while. LOL! (Until his backs turned) Pam

It is worth searching the OPRs Old Parish Registers which have been transcribed onto microfilm. If you ever get the chance go to Edinburgh and spend the day in the offices. Searching them is fascinating. When the scottish system began in 1854 they required a lot of information which was not previously recorded so you won't get the wealth of information that you would had this marriage been 10 years later. Before the system was standardised the quality and reliability of information depended on the literacy and conscientiousness of the registrar. Normally they would list a marriage as date plus name and parish of the two people involved but nothing else. Occasionally though if the couple were very important there would be a fuller description of the event. I think personalities may have come into it as well, as the entry of one of my ancestors for the first born of his second marriage was footnoted by the fact that the year before he had had a daughter out of wedlock with another unmarried woman in the next village! So see what the entry turns up. You might get some very interesting snippets such as first marriages or scandal! Regards Abigail

Pam and Jackie, thankyou for your help. So far these two are my only (known) Scots relatives and are, for me the present end of the line (Or start of it if you see what I mean). Still may be worth £6 if I can find out more. Roger

hi roger, because of the date there wont be a marriage cert but could be on the OPR records which dosent give much information .extracts would be a image of the register entry and usually only has date of marriage , couples names (occasionally you may get the brides fathers name) and place of residence or parish . hope this helps regards jackie.

Roger if you go on the Scotlands People site you should have a pretty good chance of finding this. It cost £6 so hopefully you have other rellies to look up as well. When you have found the corrrect people you can view the register entry for 5 credits (you get 30 credits for £6). Its an excellent site and you can order certs as well but there isn't usually a need to as you get to see it all on there and you can save it to your PC. Hope that helps Pam P.S. thinking about it, that date may only get you access tot he marriage banns and that doesn't have an image. Can't quite remember.

Robert FAIRBAIRN married Elizabeth YOUNG on 26 Sep 1847 in Blantyre, Lanark, Scotland according to the IGI on the LDS site. Will someone tell me if a copy marriage certificate or anyother form of certification is available and how/where it can be obtained with this information only. Thanks, Roger
