It would be very helpful if everyone could update their trees with dates and places of birth and death. This would avoid disappointment when contacting members through the Quick Search for an ancestor with a common name where no details of date or place of birth given. Very often the member has the information but has just not put it in. I have also been guilty of this but am making an effort to update details every time I get more information. Kind regards, Kathy x

Hi Terri, It's best to verify that they are your ancestors with either birth/marriage or death certificates or census returns or parish registers before putting them on your tree. You would also then have a reasonable idea of the date of birth/death or burial. If you are not sure of the date, just tick the box where it says it is an approximate year. It is easy to forget to update your tree when you have new information, especially if you keep another tree on Word or elsewhere. I know because I have done this myself but it saves disappointment requesting information from other members about an ancestor with the same name but no place or dates given. Good luck with your research, Kathy xx

Kathy The main reason for people not putting places and dates is that they have uploaded their tree from gedcom. Unfortuantely it doesn't display the places and dates when they do this. I must admit it's very frustrating, especially when your looking for a common name. I can't see why those that do it this way can't add the info after. Even if they have a lot of names in their trees, if they just did a few each day it would soon mount up. But I know some memebers refuse point blank to do this. Jeanette

Nicholas, If you need help with finding dates and places for your rellies, please post a message, and you will find lots of people who will be only too pleased to help you find out where to look. There are some very nice people on this site who understand the difficulties of newcomers so please don't be embarrassed to ask away. I think the difficulty arises when people download a gedcom tree and do not go back to enter dates and places. Kind regards, Kathy x
