I have just bought a new laptop, which has a firewall, but doesn't have an antivirus. Can anyone recommend an antivirus for XP and where I can get it free if possible. Thanks, M.

I use a brill free download from www(.)grisoft(.)com called AVG Antivirus. Open up the site and you will see the free download on the left hand side. Give me a shout if you get stuck. Best of luck, Kate

Morfydd I have a spare Norton anti-virus disc I can send to you. It's the 2002 edition, but it wouldn't take long to download updates, as far as I know anyway.

I too use AVG antivirus and have found it excellent, I update more often though, every few days.

Morfydd, Take William up on his kind offer, I run XP with Norton AV and have no virus probs at all. Any that sneak through when I lower my firewall are deleted immediately. Andy

Looks like I probably will Andy, my husband likes Norton too, me, haven't got a clue, just chuffed to have my own computer at last. M.

I too use Norton... Both the firewall (It's supposed to be better than XP's own???) and the AV. You will have to subscribe to get the updates though. Bob

For a free trial go to www(.)avp(.)ch and get the free trial of the Kaspersky avp. I have been using it for years and never suffered an attack. This is probably because Kaspersky usually has a solution to new virus' before even Symantic has logged them on their website. Best of all is that it is very cheap!! Roger

Whatever anti-virus system you get, it is essential that you can get (preferably daily and automatically) virus definitions updates. And a firewall is almost as important.

For a firewall with a freeware version, I'd recommend ZoneAlarm (can't remember web address but it will come up in any web search). It's on the one I'm using now with XP and Norton antivirus and is also on my older puter which still uses Windows 98. Works fine with both.

We have Norton and Zonealarm on our home computer. My new laptop came with a firewall, I have downloaded a 15 day trial of Norton for now and it is working fine. M.
