Maybe this is the equivelant to the modern day answer of 'Jedi" in the religion catergory!

I think the ennumerators got a bit 'slap happy' sometimes, just to add to the confusion. My ggggrandfather was a Printer but on the 1891 it quite clearly states Painter. Another one was a chef. His surname is marked as Ernest COOK (whereas his name was GAU!). All sent to challenge us.

Of course, after tramping up and down miles of streets, probably in the rain knowing British weather and desperate for a sit-down and a cup of tea, I doubt whether many enumerators would bother to challenge the information they were told if it sounded half-plausible.

took the following from an enumerators book, 1841 ".... and every Person refusing to answer, or wilfully giving a false Answer to such Questions or any of them, shall for every such Refusal or wilfully false Answer forfeit a Sum of not more than Five pounds nor less than forty shillings, at the Direction of any Justice of the Peace or Magistrate before whom Complaint thereof shall be made" A footmote says the enumerator should show this to anyone who refuses to answer or who he suspects is giving false answers.

David, I have often wondered about occupations listed on certs too. Even my own wedding cert would be awfully misleading to anyone searching in later years. I think the vicar was being a little economical with the truth back in 1981. Sandra

Does anyone know what sort of penalties were imposed on people who made false declarations during a census and were they ever followed through? I'm thinking of my gggrandfather who is marked down as a lawyer on the 1901 census much to his relatives astonishment. We know that he finished his days happily as a publican! Best regards, David
