how to ask for information

when sending a request for information please include details that will help the person your writing to. example: dont ask if I know a john donaldson that maybe lived in Glasgow sometime ago. Give details that identify the person. Full Name An approx or exact date of birth/place. Parents or wife/husband. As a researcher of my own family tree I can fairly quickly access my own database and identify if their is a connection. and if the request looks like a close match I can "hit" the cd's and do a quick search. The requests without details get a 'cant help" reply as "quick as" clicking the reply button, cause there's no point in doing any search. As a result of decent "information provided" i've linked to five "new family" members and extended my family tree from 1850's back to 1545, from 700 names now to in excessof 2,000. all because the writer treated me with respect and provided data that i can use to search with. Hope this helps others to communicate. Remember that Genesconnected is also for genealogists not just folks looking for lost relatives in the 1900's. and because of looking for lost relatives my own "lost neices" found me here in NZ.

John I appreciate perhaps you may be frustrated at some requests. However some people have very little information to begin with. They may be adopted or perhaps like myself my father was brought up in an institution in Ireland. We may have no records to begin with or the information we do have is incorrect. I feel the help given unselfishly by people on genesconnected is invaluable and I for one am grateful for any website which helps people to find their Family. Margaret
