Just to confuse the issue even more, regarding baptisms. Both my children were christened at home,on the same day, there was no local church in the area, and the vicar for that area, suggested the ceremony to be held at home, that was in the 1970s.Glad this thread was brought up,It will remind me to make an extra note of this for my own grandchildren. trish

Hi Chris I know that Daniel Joseph was the father of son of William as I have his birth cert which details that as the father's name as well as giving Ann Hodges as mother which is correct. I have been told that Daniel Joseph committed suicide after the death of his wife, and that the children were brought up in an orphange. I suppose that might have led to the confusion in my grandfather's mind as he would have been about 7 wheb he lost both his parents. Quite tragic I think. Any other comments welcome. Pauline

Hi Pauline - Having read your thread several times, I have to ask, how do you know that your Gt Grandfather was Daniel Joseph and not Joseph Daniel born18/9/1861? Could that be why your Grandfather gave his Father as Joseph Daniel on his marriage certificate? Just a thought. Cheers Chris

Regards to late baptisms- my daughter was baptised at seven months because she had been in hospital having an operation when she was very young, so we wanted to wait until she was fully recovered before we arranged the christening. My brother was also christened late as my mother had rheumatic fever after the birth and took months to recover.

Hi Pauline, With regards to the baptisms, it wasn't unusual for families to have more than one child baptised on the same day. I have a whole family of six children, ages ranging from 18mths to 14 years. Sometimes the local vicar went around his parish searching out families who he knew hadn't attended his church, to remind them of their duty to have the children baptised. Cass

Pauline About the children being baptised on the same day although they were different ages I have come across entries like this before and in some cases it was because the family were new to the area . plus the names in census's records arent always correct bren

Pauline I've read your posting several times now and feel no wiser. However, since 1864 birth record is consistent with ages given on all 3 censuses, I think it is probably right. I am wondering why his elder brother wasn't baptised earlier - in my family the latest anyone went without being christened was about 2 months - most were within weeks if not days of birth. The name thing is confusing, but relatives seemed to use names interchangably. Do you know why your Daniel was adopted, and whether his elder brother was too? Helen

Hi All My great grandfather was Daniel Joseph Richards, born St Pancras c1864/5 according to census results in 1901, 81 and 71. However, on searching birth records (and also IGI) the only record I can come up with is Daniel John within the right time scale in St Pancras. I do know that he was adopted by Joseph and Martha Tripp, and was with them in 1871 census. Is it possible that the Tripp's may have changed his second name to reflect that of his adopted father? I've had a hard enough job as it is with this rellie as my grandfather put his father's name down as Joseph Daniel on his wedding cert! Off down wrong avenues there then!! What is even more confusing is that on IGI there is a Joseph Daniel christened on the same day as Daniel John - 30th May 1864, and seemingly to the same parents - John Richards and Jane. His dob is given as 18 Sept 1861 with Daniel being 8th May 1864. Have I found the right birth record? I am really confused. Any ideas appreciated. Pauline
