I'd like to say thanks to Keith who has emailed Michelle and myself direct to help with our query regarding missing service numbers. It's so nice when people volunteer to help :))

Michelle, I've just seen your reply on this thread - and it's just what I was going to ask! If anyone answers and I happen to miss it, could you email me please? I've only just discovered this week that several ancestors were in the forces but have no other details. Thanks a lot, Mandy :)

Hi, Is it possible to obtain service records without knowing the service number? My grandfather died when my dad was very young and there are no surviving relatives who could give me this information (his medals and everything else were stolen years ago). He was a desert rat but that's all I know. Thanks. Michelle

Hi Janice, You might be able to get details of your grandfather's Medal Card from WW1. You can look them up on the following site. www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/whats-new.asp Rose

It doesn't take weeks - it takes months. Mine arrived last week, after a 10 month wait. It was well worth it though, with so much information sent. Good luck!

Hi. Janice The following are the details for the BRITISH ARMY RECORDS The phone numbers (Glasgow) are split into alphabetical sections for each surname and ease of use. They are:- A - CLAD: 0141 224 2743 CLAE - FE: 0141 224 2826 FI - KE: 0141 224 2544 KH - OL : 0141 224 3515 OM - SHEQ: 0141 224 2744 SHER - Z: 0141 224 2335 BUT, you had best get the persons legal next of kin to make the application if it is not yourself as you will have to prove that you are entitled to the information. This will /may require Death Certs etc. and the completion of a legal declaration of kinship forms. They are very helpful so ring the correct number and ask for the forms and advice then if you still want to proceed, establish the next of kin and ask them to sign the forms. When you ring Glasgow they will want to know the Number and Name of the soldiers plus the rank if possible. Search results will cost about £25. and can take several weeks to come through. Good Luck Jim

I have recently come across the service numbers for two of my grandparents who were in WW1 and WW2. At the moment, and for the foreseeable future I can't get to Kew. So how can I use them?
