There are two Ancestry sites - ancestry(.)com and ancestry(.)co(.)uk, so if you want British records then subscribe to the latter.

Ancestry is a paying site, isn't it. I haven't joined that one yet as I did not know how American it was (and therefore how much useful UK info I would find). Again, have registered for, but not bought credits yet for, 1837online. will look at those places you suggested for pre 1881 data which I am also having a problem with thanks all for your advice, and any further advice from others would be appreciated

Barry Thanks for the clarification, all my ancesters stayed in the same tiny parish so I was happy enough just to look through it.

Yes Chris, 1837online is the official GRO site so has index from 1837 up to a lmost the present day. Plus points are the full coverage and the fact that it hasn't been retranscribed, you see images of the index books, so less chance of errors slipping in. Minus points - it is still an index and errors of mistranscription and omission could and did happen when events were entered; apart from the most recent years its searchable only by the first three letters of surname, not full name - this can mean having to guess which of 20 or more pages is the one you want if its a popular name and it gets expensive if you guess wrong. Post 1900 is really difficult, only 1837online has BMD records for this period and you probably know how costly that is. Pre-1881 censuses are available to buy (eg from S&N or Stepping Stones). 1871 is being put on Ancestry and all Cornish censuses have been put online (but are not name searchable). Familyhistoryonline and FreeCEN have patchy census data as well.

Hi I am having quite a bit of success in tracing ancestors prior to 1900 -1910 (by using 1881 and 1901 census, freeBMD and Latter Day Saints site) but would like to know how I search from that time to the present day, as I am not having success with freeBMD or any other sites any advice would be helpful - internet based as I do not live in UK also were there any census carried out prior to 1881 and how do I access these regards Shirley
