Shirley I also use 1837 on a fairly regular basis and would agree with the previous replies. Surnames are listed by the first three letters only, so for example I was looking for an unusual surname but it began PAR so it was in with PARKER. However, where there are multiple pages, you usually get an idea after your first couple of searches whereabouts in the page order your name comes. For instance, if there are say 20 pages, you might discover that your name is usually on about page 4, thus saving you searching through every single page. It's also cheaper than petrol or a train ticket to a records office :) Mandy

Hi I have been using 1837 quite extensively in recent weeks. And on the wholei have no complaints. Its properly indexed and easily seacable. The previous response is right though it's long winded and costly for some of the more popular names. Im lucky my main name at the moment is Daveney. But im on to robinson next! You might also finf that when you get back pre 1880 that some of the records are very dificult to read. I found this myself yesterday. I suppose ink fades with age. I managed though but had to squint a bit. Good luck with your searching. Kelly x

Hi Shirley On the whole, yes. I personally have not had a problem with it although I believe some have discovered pages with no information on them. The only drawback is that sometimes there will be more than one page to search through which will use a credit each time. This tends to be with more common names eg. Smith. Also remember that although it was compulsary to register bmd's, a fine for not doing so was not introduced until 1874, so some won't be there. TIP: print off all pages you view. Even if they haven't got the info on that you are looking for, they may come in useful at a later date. Try the Freebmd site first because as it says, it's free. Then if you have no luck you can resort to the 1837. Hope this helps Jeanette

Can people out there please confirm for me that 1837online is a good and reputable site. I am happy to pay reasonable prices for good information but am wary. I purchased units for the 1901 Census and was delighted with my results. Is 1837online as good as it appears to be?
