Birth Certificate query

I have a copy of a birth certificate issue in England where it states the following order for the mother: "First Names, Married Surname" late "another Surname" formerly "another Surname" (sorry at this moment I would rather not give the names) The first names and married surname are known to me, also the "formerly" surname is known to me; can anyone tell me what it means when they put "late". I do know that the person it is referring to was adopted and that the "formerly" surname is the one I knew......could it be that the "late" surname is her pre-adoption surname, in other words what is shown on her birth certificate? |

I have one Nash - formerly Gutteridge, her maiden name, late Burgess, the surname of her late husband. So the lady in question has been married and widowed, I think, it is in my case anyway. Hope this helps. Gen |

Thanks for your repllies (and for your email, Mary) - both of you confirmed my initial feelings that the "late" was from a previous marriage, although I am assured that the lady in question was only married the once.........delicate task ahead |
