Has anyone come across this as a first name, if so is it common? Is it a bible name. Thankyou KIM

Thankyou Geoff, just wondered because all the other children have quite "ordinary" names like Frank, Robert, and William.

I think Nimshi is better than Jehosaphat!:-) Without knowing the reasons why, it is hard to know how our ancestors chose names. My illegitimate gt grandmother was apparently v.devout and named some of her children with Biblical names, including Ruth, Samuel and Lemuel. My grandfather she called JEUEL, which is mentioned only once in the Bible. But she also had children called Violet, Frederick and Harry. Frederick was v. useful to me as his middle name Barnes turned out to be her maiden name which is how I traced her to Langham in north Norfolk, not Langley in E. Norfolk as previously supposed. I have never come across another Jeuel and would be interested to hear of any others.

I have found a few maiden names as result of sons being given them as a middle name too. Quite considerate of our ancestors (for a change!) to give us the odd pointer now & again, rather than calling all their sons Charles/George/William!

I've just unearthed the first illegitimate in the family(there are a few close calls). It looks like her mother gave her her father's surname as a middle name - unfortunately can't prove it. Helen

One of my ancestors was obviously keen on the bible. He named one son Mnason - I thought it was a mis-spell! He's mentioned only once in the bible. They also named two daughters Hadassah. Sadly all these children died in infancy. Anne

I have several with the middle name BELL which I suspect was a maiden name - but trying to prove they're connected isn't easy! Jan
