That sounds like a good fit Paul. Mine worked in a shipbuilding yard, so more dealing with the finished product than actually making it, but still interesting! Maz. XX

Maybe it was similar, or associated with a "puddler" (Yes I meant to type the "u") Take a look at www(.)geocities(.)com/jenks436/puddler.html It is quite interesting. Paul

Hi Maz It was on the census I am transcribing for Freecen and didn't know wether i had read it correctly or not and it's for Darlington where there was an iron foundry. Hope you find out about your's. Paul Thanks for that you could be right. Thanks Ann

Maybe he was someone who stirred pools of molten metal to bring impurities to the top so that the slag could be skimmed off. Paul

Ann I am struggling here to find this. Mine also worked in an Ironworks - Thames Ironworks. If yours worked here too then you might like to know that I am hoping to look at their records in a couple of weeks time. My weirdest one was listed on the census as 'older up in ironworks' - Zoe found it, apparently he was the man who held up the iron/steel plates while the other bloke put the big rivet things in! Was yours also a naval ironworks, or a different industry?? Let me know as I am intrigued now. Maz. XX
