I emailed them asking what it would actually cost - this is their reply Dear Gaynor The Index to Birth, Marriage & Death registers covers the whole of England & Wales from the UK General Registry Office. Search 1984 - 2001 currently online with more years from 1837 onwards soon to come. If you know of an ancestor which has deceased, you can search the death registers by birth date which will produce their record. Our death registers contains the birth dates from 1865 onwards, but at the moment it is only for those that have deceased between 1984 and 2001. For more information about the site, please follow the link below. http://www.bmdindex(.)co(.)uk/info(.)htm This data is hosted in connection with www.bmdindex.co.uk - visit the site for more information - or select BMD when purchasing a subscription. Current prices stand at £5 for three months and £14.95 for a year. Our searches don't cost you credits! Only viewing full references cost credits. The new BMD Indexes use a simple viewing credit system. Searching the records will return a record summary and an option to view all details (the full record) for each entry. Each credit entitles you view one full record, so 200 credits entitles you to view 200 full records! This means when you sign up to a BMD subscription you will get an initial number of credits to get you started. Your credits will be used each time you view a full record. Your balance is displayed with your subscription on the 'choose subscription' screen - to top up your credits for a subscription simply click on 'Buy More' next to your credit balance and choose the amount of credits required. Credits are purchased in the same manner as ordinary subscriptions and after your payment has been processed by the secure Barclay's EPDQ facility your credit will be topped up for that subscription. It is not possible to update multiple subscriptions at once, nor can credits be shared between subscriptions. Subscription Price/ Total Credits/ Price per Credit £5.00 50credits 10 p £14.95 200credits 7.5 p £5.00 (top-up) 50credits 10 p Kind Regards Becky So, that's the answer :-)))) Gaynor

Hi Gaynor Just looked at the site and I personally find an internet site that leaves you asking too many questions when they want your money on the dodgy side. 1837 is searchable by full name, place etc from 1984 onwards also. Plus if I read it right they only go back to 1954 to date (50 years?). I'm not 100 percent sure but looking at the dummy registration forms you may also have to subscribe to each location/time frame also. I would suggest maybe waiting until they give more information about exact costs, coverage etc. Hope this helps Deb

Just had a quick look at it. It looks as though they have very few records at the moment, but the full name search will be a better job when there are more records to look at. I wonder how many credits you get for your money. Paul

I haven't heard of this but looking now at the site, their pitch seems to be a better search facility. Certainly with 1837online, only being able to search by the first three letters of a name, can make it hit and miss.

See post for info - sorry it's so long!!! Has anyone subscribed to http://www.bmdindex(.)co(.)uk - what's it like, is it worth the money and how good are the records compared with FreeBMD or 1837? Thanks Gaynor
