Hi there, Does anyone know if it is possible to state on a birth certificate that the mother is married to the father when infact they are not legally married?? An example of this is : I am trying to find the marriage of Edward Rogers to Elizabeth Lewis from the Glamorgan area. They had a child on Oct 1879 and I have the birth certificate. The mothers name on it states she is/was Elizabeth Rogers - formally Lewis. I have searched all through the 1837.com and freeBMD sights for that time span (going back to 1773) and the only match I can come up with is a marriage for these 2 names in Merthyr Tydfil in 1880. Was this sort of thing done back then (i.e living in "sin" for a few years before marriage :-) ?? Was it illigal to put the wrong name on the certificate or didn't it matter? I would be grateful for some answers. Thank You Caroline

I have my great grandads birth cert and his parents are listed as normal. I can not find a marriage for them, the Ashbourne registrar has also looked for me. I can only assume they never married. So the answer to your question is, yes they did live in sin and give false info on the birth certs of their children Margaret

I have an example of this happening in 1966!! So I'm sure it went on back then too. Sam
