I have the date, place and full names of a marriage in my family in the 1800's and would like to know how I go about finding out what children this couple had and therefore follow through their descendants Thanks for any help - very new to this!

You may be better working backwards in order to link to this family. IE from you to father etc. When exactly was the marriage? If the late 1800s then try find them in 1881 census or 1901, both of which are on line.

Hi Shirley, Have you tried, Family Search Internet. In case you are not aware of htis site, it is the Mormon one. It has details of many marriages, children and some burials/deaths. It also contains the 1881 census. Very useful. Also some other facilities. You could also try Free BMD (Births, marriages and deaths. A very new site biut growing all the time. Hope this is some use to you, Roy

Hallo Shirley! Welcome to the mad world of genealogy! Two must-use sites for your favourites: www(.)familysearch(.)com - remove brackets when typing This is the Mormon (or Church of Latter Day Saints) site. It is free to use, has the 1881 census on it. Also a lot of parish records of births and marriages off the IGI (International Genealogical Register). These records are not necessarily accurate, but they will tell you which registers you need to check to see the original information. Not all parishes are covered. FreeBMD - this is free, but not comprehensive and does not have much after 1900 yet. Also some parts of the country aren't covered. please ask if you need clarification/more info. The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. Happy hunting Helen

hi Shirley, Have you tried familysearch yet? I have 1881 census on disc and have looked for your info, found Phillip C Gates visiting in Steyning, Sussex and Annie Gates living in London. If you haven't looked I've got it written down. I also looked on freecen.rootsweb for 1891 and found the 2 of them visiting in Steyning, Sussex. If you need further details, let me know. Helen

Thank you very much for the information...found lots via family search and 1901 census, plus of course 1881 census. Why did nobody tell me how addictive this is!!!! and thanks all for the suggestions of other websites. That has been a fantastic help. Anyone know of any sites particularly relating to Australia (I am seriously branching out here....once I get a snippet I follow it so now have many branches - probably not advisable, but fun anyway) Philip Chasemore Gates was my great great grandfather and his son Chasemore Philip Gates was my great grandfather so am delighted for all your help in finding direct relations

Hi Shirley type "australia" in the search box at the head of this board, and wait a bit ... you will then get all the other threads with Australia in the title. Lots of web-sites here then try "aussie" and "oz" ! Good Hunting, Bob
